Jezička koncepcija i leksički obuhvat
Jezička osnova i regionalno-nacionalni standardni varijeteti
Istovremeno postoje razlike u svim jezičkim oblastima: izgovoru, fonologiji, tvorbi riječi, fleksiji, sintaksi, leksici, semantici, frazeologiji i jezičkoj upotrebi.
Razlike se ne podudaraju nužno s državnim granicama: one postoje i unutar svake države, među regijama, govornim zajednicama i društvenim grupama. Bosanski, hrvatski, crnogorski i srpski ostaju relevantne regionalno-nacionalne, institucionalne i standardološke oznake.
Upotreba naziva „bosanski“
Leksikografski obuhvat: Bosna i Hercegovina
Historijski slojevi i jezički kontakti
Linguistic Framework and Lexical Scope
Linguistic unity and regional-national standard varieties
The dictionary adopts the structural-linguistic position that Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian are regional-national standard varieties of a common pluricentric language, rather than four structurally independent linguistic systems.
The shared basis is evident in an extensive common core vocabulary, strong similarities in phonology, morphology and syntax, and high mutual intelligibility. At the same time, variation exists at every linguistic level: pronunciation, phonology, word formation, inflection, syntax, lexis, semantics, phraseology and usage.
Such differences do not follow state borders alone. They also exist between regions, social groups and speech communities within each country. The regional-national names continue to have distinct institutional, normative and social significance.
The designation “Bosnian”
The dictionary uses Bosnian as the name of its source language. Here the term explicitly includes the shared linguistic area in which corresponding regional-national standard varieties are known as Croatian in Croatia, Montenegrin in Montenegro and Serbian in Serbia.
This naming convention is a deliberate lexicographic choice. It does not suggest that all words and senses are equally familiar, frequent or normatively accepted throughout the area, and it does not deny the existence of the other standard names.
Lexical scope: Bosnia and Herzegovina
Although it treats the linguistic system as shared, the dictionary has a defined lexicographic reference area: Bosnia and Herzegovina, understood as both a contemporary and historical linguistic space.
It aims to include only those headwords and individual senses that are understood or used in Bosnia and Herzegovina today, or whose use there can be historically documented. The selection criterion applies explicitly to each separate sense, not merely to the headword as a whole.
Association with the Croatian, Montenegrin or Serbian standard is therefore neither a sufficient reason for inclusion nor a reason for exclusion. A word may be shared across the region while particular senses are restricted geographically or historically. Regional, dialectal, historical, colloquial and specialized words may be included when they meet the criteria.
This is an editorial objective, not a claim that every published entry and sense has already undergone complete verification.
Historical layers and language contact
The lexical core consists of common South Slavic, particularly Štokavian, vocabulary. Contact-related layers include words of Turkish, Arabic and Persian origin, often transmitted through Ottoman Turkish, alongside borrowings from German, Italian and other languages.
Internationalisms, technical terms, newer borrowings and culturally or historically marked expressions may also qualify for inclusion. Etymology, geographical distribution, standard-language status and actual usage must be distinguished.
Implications for lexicographic practice
The dictionary describes headwords and individual senses within a shared linguistic framework while recognizing regional and historical distinctions and selecting contextually appropriate German equivalents.
Two principles guide this approach: the structural unity of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian as regional-national standard varieties, and a lexicographic focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina, requiring contemporary understanding or use, or historical evidence for the headword and its individual senses.
